A little history about Montgomery
Montgomery is rich in history. Significant historical events have taken place in Montgomery from the time of the Alibamu and Coushatta Native American tribes to the Civil Rights Movement.
The Alibamu and Coushatta tribes resided in Montgomery and built several earthwork mounds as a part of their religion that can still be seen today at the Town Creek Site, The Mound at Old Cahawba Archeological Park, and The Mound at Fort Toulouse.
One interesting historical note about Montgomery is that Hernando de Soto was the first European to pass through central Alabama and almost certainly spent some time in what is now known as Montgomery, Alabama.
Another significant historical event that took place in and around Montgomery happened in 1813-1814, which was the Creek War, aka the Red Sticks War. Montgomery was an important location for settlers because of its location relative to the Alabama River.
In 1865, during the Civil War, General Wilson captured Montgomery for the Union, which was a big turning point for the North.
The most well-known and most significant events to take place in Montgomery were related to the Civil Rights Movement. The Montgomery bus boycott is taught in every school in America. Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to sit on the back of the bus, and Martin Luther King Jr. founded an organization at this time to organize the boycott movement. Another well-known civil rights movement that occurred was the march from Selma to Montgomery, where MLK and other leaders organized a march to protest a man being shot at a separate rally. Their goal was to get the attention of Governor George Wallace.
As you can see, Montgomery, Alabama is full of history. Native American tribes, the Creek War, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement are just a few of the past events that have molded Montgomery into what it is today.
