Union Springs, Alabama, is a small town in Bullock County with a population of around 3,500. Even though the town is small, its historical significance and potential for activities are not. The Red Door Theatre, Sedgefields Plantation, Black Creek Plantation, The Wehle Land Conservation Center, The National Amateur Free-For-All, The Chunnenuggee Fair, The Pauly Jail, The Field Trial Mural, The Hank Williams Mural, The Bird Dog Monument, Bonnie Plants, and Eddie Kendricks are just a few of the town’s many attractions.

The Red Door Theatre

The Red Door Theatre is located in an old church that was built in 1909. It officially became “The Red Theatre” in 2002, after the Tourism Council of Bullock County, playwright Ty Adams, and a collection of monologues compiled by Wade Hall developed the book “Conecuh People” into a play. This play was first shown at Troy University in 2002. In an effort to give Conecuh People a home, the City of Union Springs acquired said church and by 2004 premiered the play at The Red Door Theatre for the first time. It was a massive success, and by 2007, it was named one of the “50 Must-See Cultural Art Events” for the year. In 2008, The Red Door Theatre started premiering other plays so long as they were southern in nature and setting. Every year since then, The Red Door Theatre has presented four plays a year as a celebration of Southern heritage.

The Pauly Jail

This Victorian Gothic-style jail was built in 1897 for $7,520. The Pauly Jail was used in a part of the movie titled “Heaven’s Fall,” which was based on the infamous “Scottsboro Boys” case. This film, released in 2004, featured prominent actors including Timothy Hutton, BJ Britt, and Anthony Mackie. Today, the Pauly Jail in Union Springs, Alabama, is frequented by ghost hunters and people looking for a fun adventure.

Murals and Monuments

The Field Trial Mural

The Field Trial mural is a massive 3-dimensional painting in downtown Union Springs. It depicts bird dogs and bobwhite quail. The quail hunting tradition is strong in Bullock County, where bird hunting means quail hunting by default. This mural, painted by Wes Harden, pays tribute to the Bird Dog Field Trial Capital of the World.

The Hank Williams Mural

Hank Williams was born about two hours north of Union Springs. In 1948, he was hired to play at the grand opening of Western Auto. A man named Cephus Hendley captured a photo that was then used by Wes Harden to paint the famous mural we see today.

Eddie Kendricks Mural

Harden also painted a mural of singer Eddie Kendricks in downtown Union Springs, Alabama. This mural depicts the lead singer for the Temptations, members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, smiling with a background image of him and his bandmates singing live in concert. Kendricks was born in Union Springs in 1939. The Motown group called “The Temptations” was a massive success, releasing 14 Billboard No. 1 singles. Kendricks later went on to release 2 singles of his own that did very well.

The Bird Dog Monument

The Bird Dog Monument is a famous statue of a bird dog to pay homage to Union Springs for being the Bird Dog Field Trial Capital of the World and the residents of this area who have been elected to the Field Trial Hall of Fame in Tennessee.
