Prattville is a city in Central Alabama that was founded in 1839 by Daniel Pratt, hence the name Prattville. He was an architect and industrial visionary from New Hampshire. His first encounter with the area was in the 1830s, when he visited Autauga Creek. During this time, there were a lot of Native Americans living in the area. There are two counties in Prattville: Autauga County and Elmore County. The population of Prattville is 37,781, so it is a pretty small city, but there are many great things about it. Artesian wells are wells where groundwater rises to the surface without the need of pumping because there is natural pressure within the rock or sediment, aka an aquifer. There used to be over 400 artesian wells in the city limits. Unfortunately, there are only a handful of wells left, and you can find them with a quick Google search. But as you can see, “The Fountain City” is an appropriate nickname for Pratville.
